Fiesta cakes

I had a blast making these fun sweets!  I really like the Mexican culture and know that Cinco de Mayo is more of a gringo thing but it's a great time to display some fun and creative arts!  I made a margarita flavored white cake and did a key lime margarita cream cheese frosting (say that three times fast!).  The cake tastes so good- I was pretty amazed.  I saw the "chips and guacamole" on another blog and just loved them!  They taste amazing as well!  I was hoping the chips looked a little more chip-like but taste trumps looks I guess!  Both are a perfect way to celebrate boxing, friends and good food!

Hydrangea Cupcakes

These beautiful birthday cupcakes tasted just as good as they look!  I did a yellow cake with crushed pineapple and a coconut cream cheese frosting that was to die for!  The cupcakes turned out perfectly and resemble my grandma's (the birthday girl) favorite flower.

DJ Lance

DJ Lance cupcake cake!  I used cupcakes for the base of this creation.  Again, a first for me. Pardon the tinfoil cake pan!  I dyed shredded coconut for his hat and used sugar cookies for the star and his mouth.  Loved the cupcake cake and can't wait to make another, better one!

This Starwars cake was a few years ago for Braden's birthday and the first time I had used fondant extensively.  I was so proud of my little cake and was quite aware it didn't resemble any certain Starwars character but Braden loved it nonetheless!  The Bud Light cake was a birthday cake and I am a little embarrassed by it honestly!  It had a lot of imperfections and was made after a pretty rough week- the funny thing about cakes and crafting is your mood really does effect the product.  Usually, I can get lost in a project and with this one, I felt like I didn't give it 100%.  I was happy, however, with the way the wave turned out- I used a candymelt base for that and the Bud Light letters.

Sunshine boquet

My mom LOVES sunflowers, so naturally, these cupcakes fit!  I impressed myself with these.  It's funny that I never expect things to turn out edible or presentable.  This was the first time I used a butter meringue frosting.  Not sure how I feel about the frosting- it is very temperamental and used a lot of ingredients (as most Martha recipes do).  The texture and taste were once again worth the work.  I love this little cupcake stand too (again, mobile uploads aren't the best, but we're working on that).  It displays cupcakes so simply and creates a bundled effect perfect for flower themed cakelettes.

Happy birthday cowgirl Sofia

Sofia wanted a Jessie cake from "Toy Story 3."  The cutest part is, she asked her mom for my cake services at least a six months ahead of time!  I wanted to make it a more stylized version and loved the cow print.  Yellow is Jessie's signature color so I decided to keep it abstract.  I did a basic chocolate cake on the bottom and vanilla on the top- kept it simple for the kids' taste.  I love the way the bow turned out on the top, and after learning to make the bow, know I will be adding bows to a lot of cakes in the future :)

Graduation cake pops

Sorry about the shotty photography!  That is definitely something I need to work on in these next few months!  This was my second interaction with cake pops.  I have a love/hate relationship with these popular treats.  It is a three day process and requires a lot of patience and time.  I was happy with the way these chocolate covered chocolate pops turned out- displaying them is another story!  Each concoction I make, I learn something new.  I am excited to experiment with cake pops in the future, but will tell you I prefer to make your traditional cupcake any day.

Chocolate Monarchs

This was an experiment gone RIGHT!  I loved how these candy melt butterflies turned out.  Although they were hard work, getting used to the candy melts and finding the right temperature was a challenge, but worth the effort in the end.  This was an idea that I took from "Hello, Cupcake," a book I love, but find that most of the recipes call for too many ingredients and look easier than they actually are.

Layla Bug Cake

Celebrating Baby Layla with a diaper party and a lady bug cake!  This cake turned out so well and was my first "I CAN do this cake!"  I started with no plan and just went with it as I built the cake, which is why I think it turned out so well.  The cake was red velvet with a classic cream cheese frosting.  I filled the bug layer with a strawberry filling, which added moisture and an interesting twist.  I was really happy with the way the leaves turned out.

Magic Mushrooms

"Gnomeo and Juliet" birthday party cupcakes!

I had a blas making these whimsical cupcakes for my goddaughter, Nayeli's birthday!  Inside the little mushrooms, was a surprise tie-dye batter which the kids fell in love with!
